Some cows are platelet donors. Platelets are cell fragments in the blood that enable blood to clot. Most patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatment or organ transplant need platelets to prevent life-threatening bleeding.

It takes approximately 6-8 whole blood donations to yield as many platelets as a single platelet donation. Whole blood has a shelf-life of 45 days, platelets only 5, therefore the need for platelets is always urgent.

The requirements for donating platelets are the same as for a regular blood donation. Blood is drawn through a closed, one-time-use system where it is stripped of platelets then returned to the donor. Since all red cells are returned and you lose verly little volume, there is no fatigue or lightheadedness - so cows can still run afterwards! And donate again in only two weeks!

The entire process takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours, during which time you get to sit back in a big comfy chair and enjoy a movie from Canadian Blood Services's DVD library. Aftrewards they feed you cookies! If your are interested in becoming a platelet donor, call 1.888.2.DONATE (1-888-236-6283) during regular business hours or visit Canadian Blood Services online for more information about the platelet donor program.
